Undergraduate Awards

Glen Ruby Memorial Scholarships

Deadline: October 31, 2015

The ConocoPhillips Glen Ruby Memorial Scholarships are awarded to second, third, and fourth year undergraduate students studying Geology and Geophysics.

$2000 is awarded to a 2nd year geoscience student

$3000 is awarded to a 3rd year geoscience student

$5000 is awarded to a 4th year geoscience student

CSEG Foundation Scholarship

Deadline: November 1, 2015

This scholarship is awarded to an undergrad student or a grad student who is interested in a career in exploration geophysics (or is a dependent of a CSEG member)

You must be a CSEG student member or have a parent who is a CSEG member to apply.

CSPG Undergraduate Award

Deadline: January 23, 2016

This award is given to an undergraduate geology or earth science student who is interested in soft-rock geology and oil and gas exploration and development. Awards are $1000.

To be eligible for this award you must be in your 3rd or 4th year, and must be a CSPG student member.

Stephen G. Pollock Undergraduate Student Research Grants

Deadline: February 17, 2016

The GSA offers research grants to students who would like to present their research findings at a GSA Northeastern Section meeting or the Annual GSA meeting. To apply, you must be a student member of the GSA.

L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grants

Application opens: January 15, 2015

Deadline: April 15, 2016

Students can apply directly online for this award. Applications are reviewed by the AAPG Foundation Selection Panel, and selected candidates will receive $500.

Grants-in-Aid of Research

Application opens: January 15, 2016; August 15, 2016

Deadline: March 15, 2016; October 15, 2016

Sigma Xi award grants of $400 – $1000 to students currently enrolled in a degree program who are seeking funds to support their scientific research. These grants can be used towards things like purchasing specialized project equipment, and travel to/from a field site (to name a few).

Applicants do not need to be Sigma Xi members, however most of the grant funds (75%) are allocated to Sigma Xi members or students whose supervisor is a member.

CWLS Student Award

Deadline: March 31, 2016

The CWLS awards $2000 to students whose research is focused in formation evaluation and petrophysics. Applicant’s thesis must critically examine some aspects of well logging, formation evaluation, or petrophysics.

Students submit applications in their final year of study.

There is an additional $5000 award for best thesis related to formation evaluation (applications are submitted upon graduation).

KEGS Foundation Scholarship

Deadline: TBA – last year it was due April 30, 2015

The KEGS Foundation was created to help support education in geophysics, educate the public about geophysics, and commemorate the achievements of the geophysics of our generation (more info). The scholarship provides monetary support to students pursuing a degree in geophysics.

Kenneth N. Weaver Student Travel Grants

Deadline: November 2015 (or the registration deadline for 2015 GSA annual meeting)

The Northeastern Section of the GSA awards travel grants to students presenting research at either the GSA Annual Meeting or a Northeastern Section meeting. Applicants must be a member of the GSA and either an author or co-author of the work.

Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award

Deadline: December 15, 2015

The GAC awards the Mary-Claire Ward Geoscience Award ($5000) to a graduate student whose thesis contributes to the knowledge of the geological history of Canada. The project must have mapping as a significant component.

Student Assistance Grant

Deadline: January 15, 2016

The SEPM provides assistance grants for graduate research expenses. Grants vary in amount, but are at least $500. To apply, applicants must provide a project statement, a budget, and letters of support from their supervisor and one other faculty member.

Application for 2016 has yet to be updated, but last year’s grant details and application template can be found here (this link downloads a file).

 

Regional Graduate Scholarship

Deadline: January 15, 2016

The CSPG awards scholarships of $1000 to geology or earth science graduate students pursuing a thesis-based degree. Thesis research must relate to structural geology, or be a stratigraphic study that involves clastic or carbonate rocks, paleontology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, petrophysics, or reservoir geology. Applicants must be CSPG student members.

Graduate Student Research Grants

Application opens: TBA – last year it opened December 2014

Deadline: TBA – last year it was due February 2, 2015

The GSA gives funding to graduate students for research related expenses such as room and board, travel in the field, technician services, and thin sections. Applicants must be a member of the GSA in order to apply.

AWG Takken Travel Award (Female Applicants Only)

Deadline: February 10, 2016, August 10, 2016

The Association of Women Geoscientists awards $500 towards conference expenses for a female applicant who is presenting research results (either oral or poster). The applicant must be the presenting author of the abstract and must be currently enrolled in a BA, BSc, Masters or PhD in geoscience. Applicants must be presenting at a national or international professional geoscience meeting (cannot be the GSA annual meeting).

Foundation Grants-In-Aid Program

Deadline: February 15, 2016

Grants provide financial assistance to graduate students currently enrolled in a Masters or Ph.D program. Candidate’s thesis research must have “application to the search for and development of petroleum and energy-mineral resources, and/or to related environmental geology issues. A list of each grant (and their requirements) can be found here. Grants range in value from $500 to $3,000.

Chrysalis Scholarship Fund (Female Applicants Only)

The AWG offers the Chrysalis Scholarship to female geoscience graduate students who have had their education significantly interrupted by life circumstances. The scholarship fun is intended to cover costs associated with the completion of the applicant’s thesis, beyond what is traditionally covered by primary research funding. Awards of up to $2000 are available.

Post Graduate Grant Scheme

Deadline: March 31, 2016, September 30, 2016

The IAS awards 10 PhD students funding towards thesis related expenses including fieldwork, and data acquisition and analysis. The grants are worth up to 1000€ and are awarded to IAS student members ONLY.
